Chef, Restaurateur and Culinary Artist

Marco Barrila is an Italian chef, restaurateur and culinary artist whose work combines the richness of Mediterranean tradition with creativity, contemporary sensibility and an unwavering commitment to quality.

Born and raised in Messina, Sicily, Barrila discovered his passion for cooking at an early age. His culinary journey began when he was only thirteen, working in his grandmother’s historic trattoria, La Caraffa, an establishment whose origins date back to the nineteenth century.

Growing up in Italy and travelling throughout both Northern and Southern regions of the country exposed him to the extraordinary diversity of Italian regional cuisine. By the age of eighteen, he had already gained practical experience through apprenticeships in local bakeries, butcher shops and pasta shops, developing a deep understanding of ingredients, craftsmanship and traditional food preparation.

At the age of twenty-four, Marco Barrila moved to New York City, where he began building his professional career as a chef. Over the years, he developed a distinctive culinary philosophy rooted in authentic Italian tradition while remaining open to international influences and contemporary creativity.

Chef Barrila is known for bringing a refined and personal touch to culinary experiences, combining thoughtful hospitality with a cuisine inspired by traditions from around the world. At the heart of his approach remains a profound respect for Italian culinary heritage and for the quality and integrity of ingredients.

A strong advocate of sustainable food, he believes in using fresh products sourced whenever possible directly from butchers, farmers’ markets, fishermen and gardens, embracing a genuine farm-and-sea-to-table philosophy.

His professional activity encompasses the roles of chef, caterer and restaurateur, and he has also appeared as a Food Network talent. His achievements have included recognition as a Top 40 Chef in New York City.

Based on the East End of Long Island, Marco Barrila is the creative force behind Barrila’s Pastaria & Restaurant in Southampton and is also co-owner and “lobster master” of the Shinnecock Lobster Factory Southampton.

For Marco Barrila, cuisine goes far beyond the preparation of food. It is an expression of identity, memory, creativity and human encounter. His work brings together the flavors of his Sicilian roots and the cosmopolitan energy of New York, transforming the Italian culinary tradition into a living and constantly evolving form of creativity.

Through his passion for craftsmanship, beauty and conviviality, Marco Barrila joins Tota Pulchra as an expression of the Association’s commitment to promoting talent and the many forms through which Italian culture and creativity can speak to the world.
